Robin Hood’s Bay

After visiting Castle Howard, we headed to Robin Hood’s Bay with a quick stop at the Saltergate car park on the A169 to admire the Hole of Horcum. We were on a tight schedule so we didn’t stay too long but there is an 8km hike starting from this car park which looks brilliant!

Après notre visite de Castle Howard, nous nous sommes arrêtés quelques minutes sur le parking de Saltergate sur l’A169 pour admirer le trou de Horcum. Nous avions un programme chargé donc nous ne sommes pas restés longtemps mais il y a un sentier de 8km en partant de ce parking qui a l’air sympa!

We arrived in Robin Hood’s Bay right on time for the afternoon tea we had booked at Victoria Hotel. It was the biggest afternoon tea I have ever seen, the number of sandwiches and cakes was outrageous! Everything was delicious though and they kindly offered to give us doggy bags for all the food we had left.

Nous sommes arrivés à Robin Hood’s Bay pile à l’heure pour l’afternoon tea que nous avions réservé à l’hôtel Victoria. Je n’ai jamais vu un afternoon tea aussi copieux et nous n’avons pas pu manger tous les gâteaux mais ils nous ont gentiment offert des doggy bags en partant.

The hotel is at the top of the village and has an amazing view over the bay although the view completely disappeared for about five minutes during one of the craziest hailstorms I have ever seen! It didn’t last though and, by the time we had finished our food and left the hotel, it was nice and sunny again.

L’hôtel se situe au sommet du village et a une vue magnifique sur la baie. Nous avons ainsi pu voir la baie disparaître complètement pendant une des pires averses de grêle que j’ai pu voir. Nous avons eu de la chance car elle n’a pas duré et le soleil était de retour avant que nous ayons fini de manger.

Robin Hood’s Bay is one of those British seaside towns that make you feel like you are going back in time. It reminded me of Clovelly or Staithes which is actually not far from Robin Hood’s Bay and which will be one of the next posts here.

Robin Hood’s Bay fait partie de ces villages côtiers britanniques qui donne l’impression de remonter le temps. Le village m’a rappelé Clovelly ou Staithes qui est d’ailleurs très proche de Robin Hood’s Bay et que vous verrez dans un des prochains articles.

We found a stairway at the end of the alley next to the Smugglers which took us to some great views of the village and bay.

Nous avons trouvé un escalier au fond d’une allée à côté du Smugglers qui nous a mené à de magnifiques vues sur la baie et le village.

Overall we had an amazing day out in Yorkshire with a perfect balance of countryside and seaside! If this was Coast vs Country, I am honestly not sure who would win…

Au final, nous avons passé une excellente journée dans le Yorkshire avec une matinée à la campagne et l’après-midi à la mer!

Castle Howard Gardens

After our visit of the inside of Castle Howard, we headed out to explore the grounds. The weather was changing constantly but it never got bad enough for us to head back and we had a brilliant time walking around.

Après avoir visité l’intérieur du château, nous sommes sortis pour explorer le parc. La météo était très instable mais suffisamment clémente pour nous permettre de profiter de notre promenade.

We first headed to Ray Wood which was beautiful and had a lot more flowers than I imagined. We were lucky enough to run into a stag which was both terrifying and amazing! Unfortunately, there was no time for a picture so you will have to take my word for it.

Nous nous sommes d’abord dirigés vers Ray Wood. Ce bois était charmant et beaucoup plus fleuri que je ne pensais. Nous avons eu la chance de rencontrer un cerf, ce qui était à la fois merveilleux et terrifiant! Malheureusement, nous n’avons pas eu le temps de prendre une photo et vous devrez me croire sur parole.

We then arrived at the Temple of the Four Winds which was my favourite part of the grounds. The view over the Howardian Hills and New River Bridge is incredible and it’s such a peaceful place. We had already booked an afternoon tea in Robin Hood’s Bay (which we were really looking forward to as we were pretty hungry by that point) but I reckon it would make a perfect picnic spot!

Nous sommes ensuite arrivés à ma partie préférée du parc : le Temple des Quatre Vents. C’est un endroit très paisible et la vue sur les Howardian Hills et le pont de New River est magnifique. Nous avions déjà réservé un afternoon tea à Robin Hood’s Bay (que nous attendions avec impatience car nous commencions à avoir très faim) mais je pense que ce serait un endroit parfait pour un pique-nique!

From there, we headed back towards the castle via Temple Terrace to see the Atlas Fountain.

En partant du temple, nous avons marché vers le château en suivant Temple Terrace pour aller voir la fontaine d’Atlas.

We also found this giant frame near the fountain which was pretty cool.

Nous avons trouvé ce cadre géant près de la fontaine qui était plutôt cool.

The last place we saw was the Walled Garden which we fell in love with as it reminded us of the film The Secret Garden!

Nous avons terminé notre visite par le jardin clos dont nous sommes tombés amoureuses car il nous a fortement rappelé le film Le Jardin Secret!

Castle Howard

A couple of weeks ago, I had the pleasure of having my friend Charlotte stay with us for a few days to visit York. We had a great time exploring the city itself but on Saturday, we hired a car and went to visit Castle Howard before heading to Robin Hood’s Bay. I had seen Castle Howard before, during a walk in Welburn, but only from a distance and I was looking forward to visit the inside and especially to explore the grounds.

Mon amie Charlotte est venu nous rendre visite il y a deux semaines pour visiter York. Nous avons eu le temps de bien explorer la ville en elle même et nous avions décidé de louer une voiture le samedi pour aller visiter Castle Howard et Robin Hood’s Bay. J’avais aperçu Castle Howard durant une promenade à Welburn mais seulement de très loin et j’étais impatiente de pouvoir visiter l’intérieur et les jardins.

The castle is huge with 145 rooms but not all of them are open the public. There was a fire in 1940 which destroyed a big part of the house and some of the rooms have been partially restored for the filming of Brideshead Revisited in 2008 whilst others have been fully restored soon after the fire.

Le château est immense avec 145 pièces mais elles ne sont pas toutes ouvertes au public. Une grande partie du château a été détruite lors d’un incendie en 1940 et bien que certaines pièces aient été restaurées rapidement après l’incendie et que d’autres le furent en 2008 pour le tournage de Brideshead Revisited, une partie du château n’est toujours pas restaurée.

During the fire, the dome collapsed and the ceiling by Antonio Pellegrini ( The Fall of Phaeton) was destroyed. It has been rebuilt in 1960 though and The Fall of Phaeton recreated shortly after so today’s visitors can still admire it.

Durant l’incendie, le dôme s’est effondré et le plafond par Antonio Pellegrini (The Fall of Phaeton) a été détruit. Aujourd’hui, les visiteurs peuvent tout de même l’admirer car le dôme a été reconstruit en 1960 et le plafond recréé peu de temps après.

As you could see in the first picture, we arrived at the castle with glorious blue skies but the weather started deteriorating during our visit of the rooms and by the time we came out to explore the grounds, it had obviously started raining…

Comme vous pouvez le voir sur la première photo, nous avons été accueilli au château par un magnifique ciel bleu mais le temps s’est dégradé pendant notre visite et quand nous sommes ressortis pour visiter les jardins, il avait bien évidemment commencé à pleuvoir…

It was only drizzling though so that didn’t stop us from enjoying our walk in the gardens and the sun wasn’t gone for too long.

Heureusement, ça n’a pas duré et nous avons pu profiter d’un beau ciel bleu pour notre visite des jardins.

Ria Formosa

We arrived at Quinta do Lago hotel around noon on our last day in Portugal, dropped our bags and went straight back out to go and explore Ria Formosa. This natural park is a beautiful coastal lagoon which is now one of the 7 Natural Wonders of Portugal and we had a brilliant time there! You enter the nature reserve through a car park (which is right outside the hotel) and have three choices : crossing the bridge to the beach or following one of the nature trails, either left or right. We decided to cross the bridge first to have a look at the beach before starting the trail.

 
Pour notre dernier jour au Portugal, nous sommes arrivés à l’hôtel Quinta do Lago vers midi pour déposer nos valises et nous nous sommes très rapidement dirigés vers Ria Formosa. Cette réserve naturelle est un très beau lagon côtier qui est une des merveilles naturelles du Portugal et nous y avons passé une merveilleuse après-midi. L’entrée de la réserve se trouve à la sortie du parking de l’hôtel et il y a trois chemins différents. Au milieu se trouve le pont qui mène à la plage et il y a un sentier à droite et un à gauche. Nous avons décidé de traverser le pont pour voir la plage avant de revenir sur nos pas pour visiter la réserve.

After that, we followed the trail that was on the left and enjoyed a sunny walk in the beautiful lagoon.

 
Nous avons donc pris le sentier de gauche et avons profité d’une très belle après-midi dans le lagon.
One thing we were not too happy to see in Portugal was the pine processionary. This caterpillar has urticating hairs which can cause allergic reaction that can even make you blind (it’s pretty unlikely though). They spend most of their time in trees but can easily be recognized when changing trees because they always move in lengthy processions. So if you see them, make sure not to touch them and don’t get too close as they can eject their hairs and the urticating protein can then penetrate the skin.

 
Il y a une chose que nous avons vu au Portugal et dont nous ne sommes pas trop fan et c’était la chenille processionnaire du pin. Cette chenille a des soies urticantes qui peuvent causer des allergies et dans certains cas extrêmes peuvent rendre aveugle. Elles passent la majorité de leur temps dans les arbres mais sont facilement reconnaissables lorsqu’elles changent d’arbre puisqu’elles marchent toujours en procession. Si vous en voyez, ne les touchez pas et il vaut mieux éviter de trop s’en approcher car elles peuvent projeter leurs poils urticants.

Ria Formosa is especially famous for birdwatchers and being able to see so many bird species in such a small amount of time was amazing!

We ended the day with a very nice dinner in the hotel restaurant and a very sad hour of packing… I can’t wait to go back to Portugal!

Nous avons terminé la journée par un délicieux dîner dans le restaurant de l’hôtel et une heure à faire nos valises… J’espère pouvoir y retourner bientôt!

São Lourenço Church

As I mentioned in my last post, leaving the resort without a car proved to be tricky. But we decided to take a taxi to go and visit São Lourenço church which was on the outskirts of the nearest town, Almancil.

 
Comme je le disais dans mon dernier article, quitter la station balnéaire sans voiture était plutôt compliqué. Mais nous avons décidé de prendre un taxi pour aller visiter l’église de São Lourenço qui était à l’extérieur de la ville la plus proche : Almancil.

Pictures were forbidden inside so, unfortunately,  I don’t have any of the amazing blue tiles but you can see them : here. I considered taking a sneaky one but changed my mind after seeing the argument between the ticket lady and a 70 year old rebel with a camera! It was a very nice day and we enjoyed a walk around the church before heading for the centre of Almancil.

 
Je n’ai, malheureusement, aucune photos de l’intérieur de l’église car les photos étaient interdites mais vous pouvez voir le célèbre carrelage bleu : ici. J’ai envisagé d’en prendre une discrètement mais j’ai rapidement changé d’avis en voyant la dame de l’accueil crier sur un vieux rebelle de 70 ans! C’était une très belle journée et nous avons explorer les alentours avant de nous diriger vers le centre d’Almancil.

The centre was pretty disappointing though and we headed almost straight away for the taxi rank to get back to the hotel. With a 30€ taxi bill to visit the nearest town, we knew we couldn’t visit the coast this way but decided to take one more taxi to visit Vilamoura which wasn’t too far either. On the algarve-tourist website Vilamoura is described as having “striking perfection, which is simply expected by the super-rich who moor their million dollar yachts in the marina. ” I was imagining something similar to Capri, spotlessly clean with luxury everywhere but full of natural beauty. Well, let’s just say I was wrong…
It turned out to be a very plain looking resort town with a marina and ugly buildings everywhere. We thought that we would, at least, get a very good lunch but ended up in Pizza Hut… We explored the marina (the taxi driver told us it was the only interesting place to see) and everywhere was closed except from steakhouses, British pubs and Pizza Hut. So at the end of the day, we paid 50€ in taxi to walk around the marina and have a pizza… Not really worth it!

 
Le centre s’est avéré plutôt décevant et nous avons très vite décidé de rentrer à l’hôtel. Avec une facture de taxi de 30€ pour un aller-retour dans la ville la plus proche, nous avons très vite compris que nous ne pourrions pas voir grand chose de l’Algarve mais nous avons décidé de reprendre un taxi le lendemain pour visiter Vilamoura qui n’était pas trop loin.Sur le site algarve-tourist, Vilamoura est décrit comme ayant : “la perfection absolue car c’est ce que les millionnaires veulent lorsqu’ils viennent accoster leur yacht de plusieurs millions de dollars au port de plaisance”. J’imaginais un endroit comme Capri, où le luxe est omniprésent, où tout est impeccable mais où la beauté naturelle de la région est toujours visible. Disons simplement que ce n’était pas exactement ça…
C’était en réalité une station balnéaire plutôt banale avec un port de plaisance et d’horribles immeubles partout. Nous pensions au moins bien mangé et nous nous sommes retrouvés chez Pizza Hut… Nous avons exploré le port (le chauffeur de taxi nous ayant dit qu’il n’y avait que ça à voir) et tous les restaurants étaient fermés à part quelques Grills, des pubs britanniques et Pizza Hut. Nous avons donc payé 50€ de taxi pour marcher dans le port et manger une pizza…

After these two days, we decided to embrace our beach holiday and to stay on Praia do Garrão but we got very lucky! The Algarve is pretty dead in winter and our hotel was almost empty. So empty that on our last night we would have been the only guests in it! So they decided to close for a few weeks and to send us to a five star hotel : Quinta do Lago Hotel.
It was right next to Ria Formosa nature reserve and we had an amazing last day there!

 
Après ces deux journées, nous sommes restés sur Praia do Garrão et avons profité de cette superbe plage. L’Algarve est plutôt déserte en hiver et notre hôtel était quasiment vide. Tellement vide que nous aurions été les seuls clients pour notre dernière nuit! Ils ont donc fermé l’hôtel pour quelques semaines et nous ont transféré dans un hôtel cinq étoiles : l’hôtel Quinta do Lago. Il était juste à l’entrée de la réserve naturelle de Ria Formosa et nous y avons passé une merveilleuse dernière journée!

Winter Sun in the Algarve

A couple of weeks ago, we looked out the window at the eternally grey sky and decided we needed some sunshine. Two days later, after checking direct flights from Manchester and local weather, we landed in Faro, Portugal to get our fix of vitamin D!
We arrived at our hotel in Vale do Lobo late at night so we didn’t see anything until we opened the curtains the next morning. The view from our balcony was incredible and I spent almost every morning on it, reading and enjoying the sun.
Il y a deux semaines, nous avons regardé le ciel gris de York et avons décidé que nous avions besoin de soleil. Deux jours plus tard, aprés une rapide recherche sur les vols partant de Manchester et la météo locale, nous avons atteri à Faro au Portugal pour une dose de vitamine D!
Nous sommes arrivés assez tard à l’hôtel et n’avons rien vu avant d’ouvrir les rideaux le lendemain matin et la vue de notre balcon était plutôt cool et j’y ai passé presque tous les matins à y lire au soleil.

The original plan was to rent a car for a few days and explore the Algarve Coast but, unfortunately, I forgot my driving license and Vale do Lobo is a resort without any public transport so we were pretty much stuck in Vale do Lobo for a week (we still managed to visit Almancil, Vilamoura and Ria Formosa Nature Reserve but I’ll tell you about them later). Lucky for us, the beach was only a 10mn walk from the hotel and it was beautiful!
Nous avions prévu de louer une voiture pour explorer l’Algarve mais j’ai, malheureusement, oublié mon permis de conduire et, les transports en communs étant non existant dans la Vale do Lobo, nous nous sommes retrouvés un peu coincés dans la sation balnéaire pour la semaine. Nous avons tout de même pu visiter Almancil, Vilamoura et la réserve naturelle  de Ria Formosa mais je vous raconterais ça plus tard. Heureusement la plage n’était qu’à 10mn de marche de l’hôtel et elle était magnifique!

The sky wasn’t always blue but it never rained and the temperature never dropped below 15 so we enjoyed long walks on the beach almost every day.
Le ciel n’etait pas bleu tous les jours mais il n’a pas plu et les températures ne sont jamais descendues en dessous de 15 donc nous avons pu marcher sur la plage presque tous les jours.

Our favourite place to eat on Praia do Garrão was Julia’s which is perfect for lunch as it is right on the beach, has incredible food, sparrows everywhere and live music on sundays.
Notre restaurant préféré sur Praia do Garrão était Julia’s qui est parfait pour un déjeuner car il est sur la plage, tout est super bon, il y a des moineaux partout et de la musique le dimanche.

We also had a walk in the resort itself and had a look at all the expensive villas.
Nous nous sommes aussi promenés dans le village lui même pour admirer les villas.

Portugal turned out to be a lot greener than I thought!

Sunday Walk in Welburn

It’s been three weeks exactly today since we arrived in York and we finally found a flat! We are getting the keys next week and we are pretty excited to be able to settle in before Christmas. I now know my way around the town and have a few favourite places to eat but, after three weeks in town, I needed a break from the city and decided to drive to the countryside for a walk.
There’s lots of beautiful areas in Yorkshire that are perfect for a day trip like the Yorkshire Dales National Park or the North York Moors National Park (click here to read about our week in the North York Moors over the summer) but on sunday I picked Welburn in the Howardian Hills. I had found this pdf  which has a few walks starting from the centre of the village and decided to follow the green route. I found parking spaces by the church very easily ( I just love how finding a parking space in the country doesn’t take 20mn…) and started following the directions from the pdf.

Cela fait maintenant trois semaines que nous sommes arrivés à York et nous avons enfin trouvé un appartement! Nous emménageons la semaine prochaine et nous sommes très excités à l’idée d’avoir un appartement pour Noël. Je connais assez bien la ville maintenant et nous avons quelques restaurants préférés mais, après trois semaines en ville, j’avais besoin d’air frais et j’ai décidé d’aller me promener à la campagne.
Il y a beaucoup de belles régions dans le Yorkshire ( le comté d’York) qui sont parfaites pour une excursion comme le Parc National des Yorkshire Dales (Vallons du Yorkshire) ou le Parc National des North York Moors (cliquez ici pour lire l’article sur notre semaine dans les North York Moors) mais dimanche, j’ai choisi Welburn dans les Howardian Hills. J’ai trouvé ce pdf qui décrit trois promenades autour du village de Welburn et j’ai décidé de suivre le sentier vert. J’ai facilement trouvé de quoi me garer près de l’église (j’adore le fait qu’à la campagne, trouver une place de parking ne prend pas 20mn…) et j’ai suivi les indications du pdf.

I walked on the main street for a bit before leaving it to start following the footpath. It took me up the hill through fields and I stopped for a bit to enjoy the view.

J’ai suivi la rue principale avant de la quitter pour suivre le sentier. Il m’a mené, à travers champs, au sommet de la colline et je m’y suis arrêté pour admirer la vue.

Once at the top of the hill, I crossed Bank Wood and loved seeing how some of the trees are already completely naked whilst others are still wearing their autumn colours.

Une fois au sommet de la colline, j’ai traversé un petit bois et certains arbres étaient déjà nus alors que d’autres portaient encore leurs couleurs d’automne.

After leaving the wood, I had to cross a field which led to a farmyard and that’s where things didn’t go as planned…

Après avoir quitté le bois, j’ai traversé un champ qui menait à une ferme et c’est là que les choses ne se sont pas passées comme prévu…

It did say in the pdf and on the first gate, that you had to follow the waymarkers through the farmyard. I followed the first three but completely failed to find the fourth one! I tried to walk about the farmyard to find it but it was covered in deep mud which almost completely covered my walking boots and there were three pretty scary dogs barking at me and no one around so I decided to turn back…
I had seen another footpath at the entrance of the wood so I followed that instead and ended up in front of these stone pillars which led me to a different part of Bank Wood.

Dans le pdf et sur la barrière, il était indiqué de suivre les balises pour traverser la cour de la ferme. J’ai suivi les trois premières mais n’ai jamais trouvé la quatrième! J’ai cherché un peu partout dans la cour mais elle était couverte de boue tellement profonde que je m’enfonçais presque jusqu’aux chevilles et il y avait trois chiens pas très accueillants qui m’aboyaient dessus et personne autour et j’ai donc décidé de faire demi-tour…
J’avais aperçu un autre sentier à l’entrée du bois et je l’ai donc suivi jusqu’à ces colonnes de pierre qui marquaient l’entrée d’une autre partie du bois.

I have been interested in bird watching for a bit now and saw quite a few there. Lots of robins and great tits and I got really excited when I saw a buzzard but I didn’t manage to get a picture of any of them! The only (barely) acceptable picture I got was of this cute little yellowhammer.

Cela fait quelques temps que je m’intéresse aux oiseaux et j’en ai vu quelques un dimanche. Beaucoup de rouge-gorges et de mésanges mais j’ai également eu la chance de voir une buse! Malheureusement la seule photo à peu près potable que j’ai réussi à prendre est celle de ce petit bruant jaune.

After about an hour of looking for birds in the cold, I started walking back to the car and, after going through the stone pillar gate again, had a glimpse of Castle Howard. I’ve been wanting to visit it for a bit now but seeing it from the top of the hill made me look forward to it even more!

Après environ une heure à observer les oiseaux dans le froid, j’ai commencé à me diriger vers la voiture, et, en arrivant aux colonnes de pierres, j’ai pu profiter de la vue sur Castle Howard. Cela fait un moment que je voulais le visiter et maintenant que je l’ai vu du haut de la colline, je suis encore plus pressé!

That was a pretty great day in the Howardian Hills and I can’t wait to see more of it. In the meantime, I’ll try to get back to posting about our road trip and I’ll tell you very soon about our first River Ouse flooding!

J’ai passé une très bonne journée dans les Howardian Hills et je suis impatiente de mieux découvrir la région. En attendant, je vais essayer de recommencer à poster les photos de notre tour du pays et je vous raconterais très prochainement notre première inondation à York!

Week-end in Langbank

Hey guys,
It’s been a while but hopefully I’m back for good! Our tour of the UK is now over but there is so many places left to show you, I should have enough posts to last quite a while… If you are interested in a sneak peak of future posts, here is the map of the entire journey : map

We ended the tour in the Lake District then headed back to Edinburgh for a few days before spending a week in Barcelona for Dean’s birthday. After a few weeks in Edinburgh looking for a flat, we changed our minds though and decided to move to York ! So that’s where we currently are, enjoying all the christmas delights that York has to offer!

 
Après une très longue absence, je suis de retour! Nous avons terminé notre voyage par une semaine dans le Lake District puis nous avons passé quelques jours à Edimbourg avant d’aller à Barcelone pour l’anniversaire de Dean. Après quelques semaines à Edimbourg à chercher un appartement, nous avons changé d’avis et avons décidé de déménager à York ! Et c’est là que nous sommes actuellement, en profitant des décorations de Noel!

Last week-end was our 5th anniversary and, because we felt like we hadn’t traveled enought this year, we spent it in Langbank.
Langbank is a tiny village a short drive away from Glasgow and to be honest, there’s not much to do there. But we stayed at the Gleddoch Hotel  and didn’t mind staying in!

Le 11 novembre, nous avons célébré nos 5 ans et nous sommes allés à Langbank pour le week-end parce que, soyons honnêtes deux minutes, nous n’avions pas assez voyagé ces derniers mois! Langbank est un tout petit village pas très loin de Glasgow et il n’y a pas grand chose à y faire… Mais cela ne nous a pas vraiment dérangé car nous étions à l’hôtel Gleddoch !

The hotel was beautiful and we really spoiled ourselves, enjoying a full body massage (the best I’ve ever had!) and a full english breakfast in bed. We didn’t mind that there wasn’t much choice for restaurants because the hotel restaurant is incredible! We ate there every night and loved every single dish we tried. The hotel also has gorgeous views of the area…

 
L’hôtel est magnifique et nous nous sommes fait plaisir avec un massage (le meilleur de ma vie!) et un petit déjeuner au lit. Le manque de restaurants dans les environs ne nous a pas dérangé car le restaurant de l’hôtel était incroyable! Nous y avons mangé tous les soirs et avons adoré tous les plats que nous avons essayé. La vue depuis l’hôtel etait également plutôt agréable…

The weather wasn’t the best but we still enjoyed an autumnal walk in Langbank and a day out in Paisley during our stay.

 
La météo ne nous a pas fait de cadeau mais nous avons quand même pu profiter d’une balade dans Langbank et d’une journée à Paisley.

Langbank is about an hour drive from Loch Lomond so would highly recommend a visit if you are in the area. Unfortunately we planned on going to Loch Lomond on our last day but had to cancel due to heavy rain…

 
Langbank est à environ 1h en voiture du Loch Lomond et je recommenderais d’y aller si vous êtes dans la region. Malheureusement nous avions prévu d’y aller le dernier jour mais la pluie nous en a empêcher…

Boat dreaming in Blakeney Nature Reserve

During our time in Norfolk, we spent two days exploring Blakeney Nature Reserve. On the first day, we followed this Blakeney Point coastal walk  and it turned out to be pretty boring… It follows a shingle beach for about 3 miles and walking on the dune was actually quite a workout! Our feet kept sinking in the pebbles with every step and when we realised that the tide was going out, we decided to walk along the wet beach which was slightly better. The problem with being so close to the water was that we were behind the dune and couldn’t see anything. All we could see for hours were pebbles and water.

 
Nous avons passé deux jours à explorer la Réserve Naturelle de Blakeney pendant notre séjour dans le Norfolk. Le premier jour, nous avons suivi le sentier littoral de Blakeney Point et il ne s’est pas avéré très intéressant… Le sentier suit une plage de galets pendant environ 5km et marcher sur la dune n’était pas facile! Les galets étaient tout petits et nous nous enfoncions à chaque pas donc quand nous avons réalisé que la marée descendait, nous avons décidé de marcher le long de la mer ce qui était un peu moins fatiguant. Le problème, c’est qu’une fois le long de la mer, nous étions derrière la dune qui nous cachait maintenant toute la vue. Pendant des heures, nous ne pouvions voir que la mer et la dune de galets.

It was beautiful and a very relaxing view indeed, especially since there was no-one else there, but we got bored after a couple of hours and decided to turn back. There was one thing that disrupted the monotony of the landscape though and that will remain a mystery to us… Every 10mn or so we would find a half orange on the beach! We found the first one funny, wondering how it got there but we ended up finding about 8 of them during our walk, scattered over almost 2 miles!

C’était une vue magnifique et plutôt reposante, surtout que nous étions les seuls sur la plage, mais nous avons commencé à nous ennuyer après presque 2h et avons décidé de faire demi-tour. Il y a bien une chose qui est venu interrompre la monotonie du paysage et qui restera à jamais un mystère… Environ toutes les 10mn nous trouvions une demi orange sur la plage! Nous avons souri en trouvant la première et avons essayé d’imaginer comment elle était arrivé là mais nous avons fini par en trouver 8 éparpillées sur plus de 3km!

It was our only sunny day in Norfolk and the clouds were back for our second day in the nature reserve. We parked in Morston Quay and kind of winged it from there. Blakeney is a beautiful place for a walk even in the rain and I loved admiring the boats there!

C’était notre seule journée ensoleillée dans le Norfolk et les nuages étaient de retour pour notre deuxième jour dans la réserve. Nous nous sommes garés à Morston Quay et avons marché un peu au pif à partir de là. Blakeney est un très bel endroit à explorer même sous la pluie et j’ai adoré y admirer les bateaux.

Beautifully threatening Norfolk skies

We spent a few days in East Runton, Norfolk at the end of May and when we first arrived, our host told us that Norfolk was the driest region in England. This great news made us happy and we were already dreaming of sunny days on the famous Norfolk coastline… Turns out, the weather was indeed dry but no sunshine for us! I didn’t really mind though because who wouldn’t enjoy such a crazy dramatic sky?

 
Nous avons passé quelques jours à East Runton dans le Norfolk à la fin du mois de mai et en arrivant notre hôte nous a dit que le Norfolk était la région la plus sèche du pays. Cette bonne nouvelle nous a donné le sourire et nous commencions à rêver de journées ensoleillées sur la célèbre côte… Finalement, le temps est resté sec mais le soleil, lui, est resté bien caché! Mais cela ne m’a pas dérangé car qui n’aurait pas admiré ce ciel fantasmagorique?

We enjoyed some very peaceful and quiet walks on East Runton beach and tons of beautifully threatening skies.

 
Nous nous sommes beaucoup promenés sur la plage d’East Runton qui était toujours très calme et reposante et qui nous a offert quelques ciels magnifiquement menaçants.

The nearest town was Cromer and we spent a great day there, exploring the pier and the town centre.

 
La ville la plus proche était Cromer et nous y avons passé une très bonne journée à explorer la jetée et le centre ville.
